Outline Syllabus

The classes held at the school can be divided into two parts; health and martial.

However remember that much of the practice overlaps, so for example, a class focusing on Taiji hand form would generally be thought of as a health focused activity, it is also a part of learning Taiji as a martial art. Although if obtaining martial skill is the principle aim of your practice, learning the form is not the first priority.

Even the Dao Yin though entirely aimed at health should not be overlooked by the martial practitioner, simply because a loose, flexible and healthy body is an essential foundation for martial study, be that Taiji or Xingyi.

Health

Practice for health should balance physical practice, and mental discipline both Dao Yin and TaiJi hand form provide that in varying measure. Follow the links in the navigation menu to read in more detail about these methods.

Martial Art / Self Defence

Both Xingyiquan and Taijiquan are fully evolved martial arts. Thorough practice of either will produce both good health and outstanding martial skill. IF THE TRAINING IS CORRECT!

Although there are differences in emphasis; Xingyi being more direct and strike based, Taiji being more evasive with a more highly developed approach to grappling there is nothing in either method that contradicts the other.

The decision as to which method you choose to study depends upon several factors: how much time do you have to practice? Which method do you think suites you most? etc.

If you think you would like to learn both it is usual but not essential to study Xingyi first as being strike based it is technically simpler, though not simple, and will generate effective skills a little more quickly.

Whilst it is not recommended to start both methods simultaneously, as it can be a little confusing, it is not necessary to complete the study of Xingyi before starting Taiji, but you should have a good understanding of the five fists and associated practices before starting Taiji. Similarly if you start with Taiji a good grasp of the basic skills and methods should be gained prior to starting Xingyi.
